How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major stock indexes fared Thursday

Banks dodged a hit from the Greek debt crisis and rallied Thursday to lead the market higher. A panel ruled that Greece’s plan to restructure its debt should not trigger any bond-insurance payments yet. Strong February sales reports from retailers and a decline in applications for unemployment benefits to a four-year low also pushed stocks higher.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 28.23 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 12,980.30.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index added 8.41 points, or 0.6 percent, to close at 1,374.09.

The Nasdaq composite average rose 22.08 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,988.97.

The Nasdaq is up 25.22, or 0.9 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 762.74, or 6.2 percent.
